You may be surprised by what's buried in your yard. Electric, gas, water, and telecommunications lines often run underground — and hitting one can cause serious injury, service outages, and costly damage. Illinois state law requires you to contact JULIE before any digging project, regardless of size or depth.
What is JULIE?
JULIE, Inc. (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators) is a not-for-profit organization that gives homeowners and professional excavators a single point of contact for safe digging. JULIE notifies underground utility owners on your behalf, who then mark the location of their lines at your property — at no cost to you.
When do I need to call?
Anytime you're breaking ground — whether it's for a deck, patio, fence, mailbox post, swing set, tree, garden, room addition, or sign — you need to call first.
How it works
Call 811 (or 1-800-892-0123) at least two full business days before you plan to dig. JULIE will notify all affected utility companies, who will mark their underground lines on your property so you can dig safely.
