Youth to Washington Tour

Each summer, electric cooperatives in thirty states, send over 1,000 high school students to the nation's capitol to learn about government and cooperatives. Illinois electric cooperatives send over sixty of these students, and two of these are sponsored by EnerStar Power.

In our area, the trip is coordinated with the University of Illinois Extension Service in Clark and Edgar counties. High school students entering their sophomore or junior year, who are participating in 4-H, may apply. 

While in Washington, students have the opportunity to visit many historical sites such as the Civil War Battlefield in Gettysburg, George Washington's Mt. Vernon, Arlington Cemetery, the Holocaust Museum and the Smithsonian Museums. In addition, they visit places like the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, The Kennedy Center, and the Bureau of Engraving to name a few more. Participants even visit with the legislators who represent our area in Washington. There is even time for a dance and a cruise on the Potomac River!
