A perfect place to spread the word about
electrical safety is to the youth of our community. Teaching
electrical safety at a young age ensures those thoughts and concepts
will remain with the children as they mature into adults. That is
why EnerStar Power sponsors several youth programs.
Each
spring, many area students attend EnerStar's 4th Grade Safety Day.
The innovative event begins with a demonstration presented by Kyle
Finely, owner of Live Line Demo. Finley shows the children how
electricity travels through wires, and what happens when a kite hits
a power line or a truck backs
into a utility
pole. The live Line display contains 7,200 volts of electricity and
is constructed with the same poles, transformers, and line hardware
used by EnerStar Power. Finley uses props such as a fake squirrel, a
hot dog, a balloon to show the effects of electricity. The Live Line
Demo in the past has been followed by a testimonial of EnerStar
member, Delmar Bell, a Paris farmer, who was injured in a power line
accident over 20 years ago. Following Bell's discussion, the
children have the opportunity to witness the important role of the
cooperative and it's utility linemen in discussions and
demonstrations, such as trying on the linemen's equipment.
EnerStar
Power launched the Get Charged! program, a joint
initiative of Touchstone Energy Cooperatives and Discovery Channel
School, to give students a real-world understanding of power, the
purpose of electricity, and the important role electric cooperatives
play in delivering the power that runs their everyday lives.
Middle
school students throughout the service area have access to the
program, which provides a variety of educational tools, including
videos, CD-ROMS, a Teacher's Resource Guide, student activity books
and other collateral materials, all at no charge to the school.
Schools
and organizations can contact EnerStar regarding our
table-top safety demonstration that utilizes electricity in a
life-like rural setting of "Electric Junction." With main characters, Neon
Leon and Lightnin' Liz, the program helps all age groups become
more aware of the importance of electrical safety.
EnerStar
is a proud participant in the Progressive Farmer Farm Safety Program
held at Kansas School. The event is
coordinated by the Carle Center for Rural Health and Farm Safety,
the Edgar County University of Illinois Extension, and the Kansas
Future Farmers of America.
EnerStar
can provide your school or club with electricity-related brochures and
literature. Materials available are suitable for pre-schools through high school. Contact
EnerStar to check on availability. Three weeks' notice is suggested as
some materials must be ordered.
